Resilience training in Hilversum for children and teenagers

At Double Defense we help children and teenagers from age 7 stand stronger, set boundaries, and speak up for themselves with more confidence. Practical, personal, and without performance pressure.

Resilience training at Double Defense in Hilversum
The training has brought our daughter and us a lot. Especially the confidence that she can effectively and resolutely guard and express her boundaries is of immeasurable value to us as parents.

What is resilience?

Resilience is not the same as acting tough or knowing how to fight. It is about feeling strong enough to make choices when something feels tense, uncomfortable, or threatening — at school, in sport, online, or on the street.

For children and teenagers, that often shows up in three layers: mental (thinking clearly under pressure), verbal (saying no and naming boundaries), and physical (protecting yourself when words are not enough). They belong together; in training we practice them deliberately as a set.

Resilience training is therefore not a one-off self-defense class, but structured practice in fixed groups. With age-appropriate scenarios, you learn to notice what is happening, choose a response that fits you, and try it safely — even if you used to go quiet, go along, or avoid the tension.

Our definition is clear: resilience is being able to stand up for yourself, with your boundaries and feelings at the centre — not beating the other person or being tougher than everyone else.

In Hilversum we train children (ages 7–10) and teenagers (11+) in separate groups, with pace and language that match their age. You build confidence in familiar situations and learn from coaches and peers in a setting that stays consistent week to week.

Who is resilience training for?

Our resilience training is for children age 7 and up who want to grow in self-confidence, setting boundaries, or responding safely in tense situations. That can be preventive, or when someone has already had a difficult experience.

You do not need to be athletic, fit, or experienced. What matters is being willing to practice step by step. We look at who the student is and what is realistic — without pressure to keep up with others.

Not sure if this fits? We are happy to think along with you.

For ages 7 and up

We offer resilience training for different age groups

Children 7-10 years

Children from 7 to 10 years old often experience some form of bullying from other children. This bullying mainly occurs when the child is somewhat shy, has difficulty making contact with peers, or learns easier/harder than classmates.

Teenagers 11-17 years

Teenagers can also experience bullying. Due to the phase they are in their lives, the impact of an incident becomes greater more quickly. Additionally, teenagers face many changes in their lives, and more and more is expected of them.

Mental, verbal, and physical resilience

In our lessons we practice recognizable situations. Each situation has a mental, verbal, and physical side — so we train them together, at a pace that fits the group.

Mental resilience

Thinking clearly under pressure, making choices, and knowing what you can do. We practice scenarios that feel familiar at school, in sport, or in social situations.

Verbal resilience

Communicating more clearly, saying no, and naming boundaries with words. Sometimes that is enough to de-escalate or avoid a situation.

Physical resilience

Practical skills to protect yourself when words are not enough. From age 11 we use protective equipment so scenarios stay realistic but safe.

Not learning to fight, but learning to handle tension

In our training groups, the focus is practicing with tension — not competition or 'who is strongest'. Through movement, role-play, and repeated scenarios, you discover what you can feel, say, and do.

One lesson may be playful and exploratory; another time it gets more physical or intense, especially with teenagers. We adjust to the group and the person. Success is not a knockout, but: I recognise this, I dare to choose something, and I know what a next step could be.

Physical self-defense (including elements from Krav Maga) can be part of the programme, especially from age 11. It supports the training; it is not the main reason you come.

Personal attention at Double Defense

Small groups

You train in a fixed group with a maximum of 16 students. This way everyone gets enough personal attention.

Your own pace

Becoming more resilient takes time. Not everyone learns at the same speed — and that is fine. There is no pressure to keep up with others.

Safe environment

Open, warm, and professional. You can practice, make mistakes, and grow within your own limits.

Experienced team

Active in Hilversum for almost 10 years, with backgrounds in resilience training, pedagogical work, coaching, and self-defense.

Getting started with resilience training

Want to know if our resilience training is right for your child? Book an introduction lesson for your child. After that lesson, we discuss together whether and how further training fits achieving the student's goal.

In a second introduction lesson, we look at how the student puts that into practice. Every student has at least two introduction lessons before they can be enrolled.
