Self-Defense: Increasingly a necessity

In a world where safety isn't always guaranteed, the knowledge and skills of self-defense provide a crucial foundation to protect yourself and others. It gives you not only physical skills, but also the confidence and awareness to recognize and avoid potential dangers. It is an investment in your own safety and well-being.

What is self-defense and why does it matter?

Self-defense is more than just physical techniques; it is a combination of awareness, assertiveness, strategy and, when necessary, physical action, with the goal of protecting yourself and others from threats and violence.

The reality is that the government cannot always provide protection everywhere and at all times. Sometimes, you need to be able to stand up for yourself. That does not mean you should actively seek out confrontations, but it does mean being assertive and protecting your own boundaries. Being able to defend yourself gives you more control over your own safety and well-being.

It starts with recognizing potential dangers and taking steps to avoid confrontation. If a confrontation becomes unavoidable, self-defense helps you respond effectively and get home safely. In a society where aggression and crime unfortunately occur, it therefore matters to be prepared for unsafe situations.

What is legally allowed in self-defense?

In the Netherlands, self-defense is legally permitted under certain conditions through the concept of noodweer. Noodweer means defending yourself or someone else against an immediate and unlawful attack. This means you are allowed to protect yourself when there is direct danger.

Your response must, however, be proportional: you are not allowed to use more force than necessary to stop the attack. What counts as necessary depends on the specific situation and is judged by the authorities. It is also important to remember that pre-emptive violence, meaning the use of force before there is a direct threat, is generally not allowed.

Self-defense or martial arts: what is the difference?

Martial arts and self-defense systems offer valuable skills and techniques, but it is essential to understand the distinction between a sports environment and a realistic self-defense situation. Sports are often competitive and focused on scoring points within a clear set of rules.

Self-defense, on the other hand, is about survival and getting home safely. It often involves unpredictable and chaotic situations in which there are no rules. In those moments, the real question is not who wins, but how you stay safe.

The self-defense system Krav Maga, for example, is designed for realistic self-defense and emphasizes quick, effective techniques that can be used in different situations. The goal is to neutralize the threat as quickly as possible and get to safety.

How Double Defense can help

Our resilience training makes use of the principles of Krav Maga and is specifically designed to prepare you for realistic scenarios. We focus on developing instinctive reactions, recognizing threats and responding effectively. This also connects naturally with our broader resilience training.

Unlike disciplines such as judo, jiu-jitsu, karate or kickboxing, Krav Maga is not bound by rules or ethical considerations. We simulate situations you might encounter on the street, at school, at home or at work, and teach you how to respond quickly and effectively.

The training includes physical techniques, mental resilience and scenario-based drills to prepare you for a wide range of potential threats. For minors, the training is tailored to age-appropriate situations and proportionality.

Learning self-defense without macho culture

At Double Defense, you learn self-defense in a safe and grounded setting, without macho culture or inflated bravado. Being able to defend yourself not only builds confidence, but also helps you respond more calmly and clearly when situations become tense.

That approach fits people who are not looking for posturing, but for clear guidance and practical application. It is also one of the reasons why the need for self-defense, especially for women has increased so strongly.

For beginners and advanced students

Good training should work for both beginners and advanced students. Especially as a beginner, you usually do not want spectacle, but clear explanations, a logical structure and exercises that help you grow step by step.

Resilience goes beyond physical strength; it also includes mental and emotional skills to manage stress and anxiety. That is exactly why you can start at your own level and build confidence over time.

For women, teenagers and children

At Double Defense, adults train with us, but so do women, teenagers and children. If you are looking for a focused self-defense course for women, we offer a dedicated course for that. For teenagers and children too, we tailor the content to age and the situations that fit that group.

Each group practises scenarios and techniques that match their daily life. For minors, we pay extra attention to what is appropriate and understandable, and to proportionality within the training. That way they can become more resilient step by step, in a setting that suits them.

Practical techniques and clear boundaries

Self-defense is not about impressive forms or scoring points, but about techniques and decisions you can use in real situations. You learn to recognize threat, keep distance, de-escalate and act when needed.

That is why we also use Krav Maga as a foundation: a system designed for realistic self-defense, with fast and effective techniques that help you get home safely.

Training with personal attention

That practical approach works best when there is room for personal attention. We look at your level, your pace and your learning goals, so you do not disappear into the group but genuinely understand what you are doing and why.

That makes our approach suitable for people who want to learn seriously, but in a safe setting with clear guidance and attention to what fits them.
